  acorncomputers.info

After a series of slowly added material to replace the default Joomla setup, and being 404 for some days, http://www.acorncomputers.info/ seems to have launched.

It's not real clear what the aim is - it's a mismatch of Acorn history, some stuff about the newer "Acorn" that existed from 2006-2009, and is sadly rife with bad grammar.

(Almost) Everyone's a critic! From an observer's POV it is nice to see somebody take the time and effort to try and contribute towards the platform and Acorn users past & present in general. I know a lot of people wish to distance away from the Acorn name, but I certainly appreciate the effort Andy is making (as with everyone involved with the platform including this site.) Good work, and I look forward to seeing how this progresses!

To try and get some contention going - Personally, I think we should encourage developments like this, even if we don't agree specifically with them. If not then, before too long, all these eager people might not be so eager!

Happy New Year

Fritz: observation only, I said so little it can hardly barely be construed as critical. Andy sent me quite a large email out of all proportion to what I wrote here, and defending various things I hadn't even remotely commented on.

As for your remonstration, as I said on TIB forums, it's not yet clear what the aim is - there's no "about" page, so I think it remains premature that this is an active contribution to RISC OS, or something else entirely. I certainly don't believe in blindly supporting something just because it has "RISC OS" or "Acorn" on it. Andy agreed as much on TIB.

Finally, for the grammar, etc:

"RISC Community" should be "RISC OS Community". "Biography's" and other apostrophe abuse should be "Biographies". More forgivable, but I also see a slightly random use of caps or not throughout the site.

Not that there's any lack of such issues on riscos.info if you look hard enough (and in a timely manner, Andy has sent me a correction to the latest item), but at least it's editable by anyone, and there's constant attempt to improve all the riscos.info content.

Don't get me wrong - I wasn't specifically saying you were critical or what riscos.info produces (I think that having upto date news posted is absolutely great now Drobe has frozen), but from reading the TIB thread I do think that some people (not including yourself) have treated Andy very poorly in this matter.

"Andy sent me quite a large email out of all proportion to what I wrote here, and defending various things I hadn't even remotely commented on."

I did, send you an email, that might have been seen to be OTT when seen against the one post, however it was more a statement to do with all the comments that have been made.

The aim, as I have tried to inform people before, is to bring together information & resources about Acorn 1978-1999, RISC OS (including ROL, ROOL and Castle) and Acorn (2006-2009)(This is a small part of the site and is contested as to being the right thing to do. If the site can help people that want to develop for either the 8it systems or RISC OS, that is great.
I fully agree that blindly supporting me, just because I mention RISC OS & Acorn a hard thing to do, All I ask it that people have some patience.
The website, is a small (although substantial project, time wise) and I do have other projects which I am negotiating with people about.

There are grammatical errors on my site, which Peter likes to point out at any opportunity, However as I have pointed out to Peter and would say to anyone else.Anyone is free to let me know of any errors and I will change them ASAP.
the email address is admin@acorncomputers.info
Most of the information on the site is being checked by the people involved, so that everything is as up to date, and as accurate as possible.
I would like to personally thank everyone that has checked the information and have agreed to supply up to date information, including Prof Steve Furber CBE, RISCOS Ltd, RISCOSOpen Ltd and Castle.

I would also like to thank the people that have offered their support for what I am doing. That has kept me going.

Best Wishes
Andy
