RISCOS Ltd, the developer of the RISC OS 6 branch of RISC OS, is rumored to be developing a version of RISC OS that will run on machines using the PowerPC processor.

Sources close to RISCOS Ltd. claim that this decision is being made to take advantage of the wide selection of PowerPC hardware that's presently available and under development, and to introduce the Amiga community to the superior performance, compatibility and usability of RISC OS.

Because the PowerPC is also a RISC processor, applications should be able to run unmodified on the new port of RISC OS, dubbed "RISC OS 7," according to insiders at RISCOS Ltd.

With the announcement of the AmigaOne X1000, RISC OS has a truly bright future ahead of it. This machine features a dual-core PowerPC processor (which will be fully supported under RISC OS, without modification of existing software, sources claim) and an XMOS processor, which will likely be used to provide 26-bit software compatibility under RISC OS. The Amiga community has a track record of releasing new hardware extremely quickly, and on schedule, so this should be one to look out for. A-EON has announced a release date of the first half of 2010.
