Here's my short review of R-Comp's port of the Hexen engine to RISC OS. Well, a stunning game that comes with Heretic, its prequel and Deathkings of the dark Citadel, an expansion pack for Hexen. It costs £32.50, which is at the top of the price range for Acorn Games but it's well worth the money. Hexen can be linked up to another Acorn or PC running Hexen, played in single player mode or can be played over the internet. Playing Acorn Hexen over the net is not recommended by R-Comp Interactive, the publisher of this port. A brilliant gem for hours of brutal fun but when it comes to lifespan, you should get a game such as Quake or Doom. There are some mods and Wads available for Hexen but they are quite hard to find on the net. Hexen is playable on an R7500+Lite, Mico or RiscPC Arm 710 or A7000+ but is rrecommended you play Hexen on an Omega, StrongARM RiscPC, Virtual RPC or Iyonix or A9 with Aemulor Pro.

If you want maximum speed and maximum sound then an Iyonix with Aemulor Pro is probably the best option. The music is unlistenable on my A7000+ with 2X Speed CD-Rom, so I should upgrade to a better machine soon, a A9Home maybe? (When the sound is fixed!) The graphics are certainly not the best around and could be improved a lot but that's what gives you a great atmosphere about the game. The game can store up to six SavedGame files that you can load when you load Hexen, but you can always store some in a different place on your hard disc and drag them to the !Hexen.SavedGames directory whenever you want to play them.

A must buy for any enthusiastic RISC OS Gamer. Great for Doom fans. Lots of violence, not suitable for young children. I give this game 91%
