Ok, lots more work.  Have discarded a few packages.  Here's the
remaining failures, along with explanations:

kaffe: Hopelessly out of date patches.  May discard.
dillo: Needs fltk2
chimera2, knews, tgif: xmkmf cross compile is currently broken
elinks: Needs configure fix
bochs, cotorrent, gerb2tiff, gnumeric: C/C++ compile issues
freesci, subversion, clisp: out of date patches
e-uae, atari800: We don't pull contrib sources right now.
dmalloc: refers to __32bit, which is a symbol we used to have in UnixLib
cppunit: packaging issues
gimp: needs libbabl
sed, findutils: symbol badness
macutils: using wrong compiler
putty: missing symbols in ChoX11 (Xkb via GTK2)
mutt, minicom, less: missing wide character support in UnixLib
ircii-pana, soundtracker: Has been removed from Debian.
vlc: Needs libpostproc
abiword: Needs libenchant
firefox2-riscpc: Needs merge with firefox2 changes.
