I've now also managed to produce pdf and svg files with different fonts
in them using cairo.
I've also got a test gtk program that should display some text on the
screen using cairo. It crashes in exactly the same place and
manner as gnumeric, epdfview and gtkmorph. A blank window briefly opens
before the crash. Font cache files are also getting
created by fontconfig. I'm gradually getting further. :-)
