It's failing on a malloc in XInitImage, although the allocation is only 40
bytes, so this suggests memory corruption, although that could be in any number
of places beforehand.

Additionally, I had put an printf before the failure to try and get the size
out, but it didn't show up unless I also put a puts after all.  This suggests
there might still be bugs in the stream handling despite John's recent
improvements.
