Bugger, I knew the binutils authors retrofited a couple releases to
include a couple of more sources to better adhere to GPL license but
apparently version 2.21 is no longer available (even the slight modified
version of it).  Not sure what I'm going to do here.

Strange, a 'make clean' + 'make' + compile of your test file results in
a correctly working binary.  Are you compiling this on RISC OS or using
the cross compiler ?
